Overview:
With the help of SHINING 3D’s iSLA-450 Pro industrial 3D printer, a hospital in Wuhan successfully 3D printed out the tibia and fibula fracture model to aid surgical planning, which reduced more than 3 hours of the operation time.
I. State of Illness
A 13-year-old child in Wuhan was injured when playing the basketball. He was diagnosed by a local hospital as the dynamic leg fracture with different degrees of fractures in the root of tibia and middle of fibula.
For such cases in the past, doctors usually made the prognosis based on the CT film and their working experience. Then the doctors selected the most appropriate steel plate during the operation by comparing the steel plates with the broken bone. Because the CT film display was not so intuitive enough, the effect of the preoperative plan was very limited, which highly increased the risk and time of operation.
II. Model Printing
This hospital in Wuhan has been introduced the 3D digital medical solution previously, so the doctor decided to use the 3D printing technology to surgical planning for the injured boy. Thus, the doctor used the SHINING 3D’s iSLA-450 Pro industrial 3D printer with the photosensitive resin somos8000 to print out and restore a 1: 1 tibia and fibula fracture model.
The printed model restored the condition of the hairline fracture, which allowed the surgeon to make observation and measurement.

III. Plan Development
By matching the steel plate with the condition and curvature of the fractured bone, the surgeon selected the most appropriate steel plate used for operation during the stage of surgical planning.

IV. Summary
Finally, with the help 3D printing technology, this operation can be successfully completed, and the patient’s pain has also been alleviated to a minimum level.
Compared to the traditional way, the preoperative simulation through the 3D printing model can averagely make each operation faster by at least 3 hours. Moreover, it increases the confidence of the surgeon as well as the safety factor during the operation.
